History

Hist 1909 4daagse.avif

The Nijmegen March, also known as the 4Days Marches, began in 1909 as a military training exercise initiated by the Dutch League for Physical Education. Designed to improve the stamina and endurance of soldiers, the event quickly gained popularity among both military and civilian participants. By 1925, Nijmegen became the permanent host city due to its welcoming environment and strategic walking routes.

During World War II, Nijmegen and the surrounding regions became pivotal in Operation Market Garden in September 1944. This daring Allied campaign aimed to secure key bridges across the Netherlands, including the vital Waal River Bridge in Nijmegen, to facilitate a rapid Allied advance into Germany. Despite their courage, Allied forces faced fierce resistance, and the operation ultimately fell short of all its objectives. However, the heroism displayed by troops during the intense fighting left a lasting mark on the region.

Today, the Nijmegen March has evolved into the world’s largest walking event, attracting participants from over 70 countries. It symbolizes perseverance, teamwork, and international camaraderie—values that echo the spirit of Operation Market Garden. The march also serves as a living tribute to the sacrifices of soldiers who fought to liberate Nijmegen and beyond.

Each year, walkers pass through historical sites tied to World War II, including the very bridges and battlefields where Allied forces once stood. By combining physical endurance with a profound historical connection, the Nijmegen March bridges the past and present, honoring the courage and unity of those who paved the way for freedom.
